Celebration of Life
Janmashtami: Celebrating the Birth of Lord Krishna
Janmashtami, also known as Krishna Janmashtami or Gokulashtami, is a Hindu
festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth incarnation of Lord
Vishnu. It usually falls in August or September, on the eighth day (Ashtami) of
the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in the month of Bhadrapada, according to
the Hindu lunar calendar.
Lord Krishna is one of the most beloved deities in Hinduism, known for his
wisdom, playful nature, and teachings in the Bhagavad Gita. His birth is
celebrated with great devotion and enthusiasm across India and by Hindus
worldwide.
The festival is marked by fasting, singing devotional songs, and performing
special prayers and rituals. Temples and homes are beautifully decorated, and
idols of baby Krishna are bathed and placed in cradles to symbolize his birth.
Devotees chant Krishna's name, sing bhajans, and recite stories of his
mischievous childhood like stealing butter, which is fondly remembered
during the celebrations.
One of the most popular traditions of Janmashtami is the "Dahi Handi" event,
where young men form human pyramids to break a pot lled with curd,
symbolizing Krishna's love for butter. The event is lled with joy, competition,
and excitement.
Janmashtami is not just a religious observance but also a time for communal harmony, joy, and spreading the message of
love, kindness, and righteousness, which Lord Krishna embodied.
